Cheap Wine of the Week

This week it’s pizza wine! Pizza with the kids last Friday got me thinking about it, and while there’s plenty out there to chose from, you can’t go wrong with this classic from Italy, Ruffino Chianti 2005. It has a clean, developing nose of bing cherries and earth with a white pepper top note, above average acidity, and rather low, fine tannins. It’s medium-bodied, has good intensity, and shows balance and refinement in a more ripe than average package at this price. Try it on yer pizza with fennel sausage, black olives and mushrooms, and thank me later. The acidity in the wine resists the acidity in the tomato sauce, the earthy note picks up the mushrooms nicely, and that cherry fruit picks up the fennel in the sausage making the wine and the pizza together far more than the sum of their very humble parts.
