Tales of the Leftover Xmas Eve Ham pt.3: My Take on the Classic Leftover Sandwich

At this point, talking about what to do with the Leftover Xmas Eve Ham is no doubt starting to conjure up images of Homer Simpson hiding his moldy staff picnic hoagie behind the radiator, complete with bloated belly and tongue hanging out and definitively to the side. But I did want to add one final plate to the mix, for it is certainly the most common and often the most savored end result for a leftover carcass in the fridge: The Leftover Sandwich.

Surprisingly, the only clip of the Homer Simpson hoagie on the the internet is from clipfish.de and is in German. But Homer’s love for his hoagie speaks universally to all of us.

Now I don’t want to step on any toes here. The creation of a Leftover Sandwich is a personal and sacred ritual, usually performed in the witching hours and involving a vast and varying range of condiments. Everyone has their own technique in this arena. However, I will add to the array with my own take on the classic leftover sandwich along with the claim that it is, quite possibly, the best one ever.

My Take on the Classic Leftover Sandwich
Turn on the broiler. Place two slices of crusty bread on a baking sheet. Butter them. On the first slice, spread a healthy layer of honey and top that with slices of Parmesan cheese. On the other place the ham. Put the baking sheet in the oven for approx 5 mins. or until the cheese has melted and the bread is toasty. Remove from the oven and top with mixed greens and Crosse & Blackwell’s Branston Pickle. Serve and consume over the sink.

Note: If you take anything away from this recipe, at the very least, go out and buy a jar of Branston Pickle. It will change the way you do midnight snacks.

Branston Pickle! The very king of the brown sauces. I think I’ll go and have some with cheese & crackers, right now.

This may clash with the Branston pickle, but a favourite of mine is Honeycup Sweet Mustard. Not available everywhere, but it’s the perfect balance of sweet and hot and amazing with pork, ham, lamb and sandwiches composed of any of the aforementioned. Well, there, guess I just proved that sandwiches are kind of personal!
