The Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival kicked off last week at the Shore Club where Executive Director Harry Hertscheg welcomed media and gave an introduction to the festival. Seventeen wines were opened, starting with a bubbly Segura Vida Cava and leading on to fino sherry, port and some festival highlights. Hertscheg touted the dry, fino sherry – so unfamiliar to North American palates – as as a lovely reception wine, to be drunk chilled in a champagne glass. A perfect choice, as this year the festival will focus on Spanish and fortified wines. Running from March 28th – April 3rd, 176 wineries from 15 countries will participate in this year’s festival, adding up to 1650 wines poured.
