You can’t beat the beans

I love to cook and be creative. I love creating and eating complex dishes with many ingredients resulting in a multi flavoured foodgasm. But sometimes nothing can beat a classic simple dish that connects you to your youth.
Baked beans on toast is an English staple, white bread, a can of Heinz Baked Beans and that’s it. I did add some HP sauce and a dash of hot sauce mind you. Every bite took me back to being a kid, sitting in front of the ‘telly’ eating on my lap or visiting my gran who would accompany the beans with home made white bread buns. Simple, classic and so tasty.
What’s the meal that reminds you of your youth?
Campbells tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich!
I think probably grilled cheese…in a White Spot pirate pack.
I’m with Degan… the White Spot double double! I’ve been having it the same way for over 25 years!
Much as I wish my culinary memory imprints were of truffle oil and fois gras, alas, it is Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup with crushed Stone Wheat crackers in it.
God, I love Heinz baked beans as well. As a kid, it was all HP sauce!
I’ve amended over the years, and dollop or two of butter and cracked black pepper over multigrain bread, with a twtch of melted sharp cheddar cheese takes me to my happy place.
But what really takes me back is grilled cheese on toast, still love it. Nom!
From my Dad’s side, grilled cheese sandwich with ketchup. And a double slice of cheese please. I love the greasy hands afterwards.
From my Mom’s side, xiao mai. I’ve never really been able to replicate the sauce though. I’m gonna call her right now!
A bowl of Fritoes and buttermilk with a couple shakes of tabasco takes me way back
I’m sure I’ve gained some pigmentation from it. I was a religious KD kid. By far my favorite lunch is kraft dinner with green onions added in and substitute the milk with either sour cream, or if you’re really hungry a dollop of cream cheese.
My god, I need to go make some now.
